WIDE RANGING TROPICAL DEPRESSION KEEPS NYC HOT

06/19/24 9:44am ET

Good morning everyone. While the East Coast bakes under the hot sun courtesy of a heatwave influenced by a very tropical pattern, we continue to watch a very large tropical depression taking up pretty much the entire Gulf of Mexico.

While not a particularly strong system at this moment, it is taking up an inordinate amount of real estate. The western edge dips into eastern parts of Mexico and the Texas Gulf Coast, while to the East,, feeder bands graze the Florida Keys with scattered gusty tropical heavy showers. Meanwhile to the south, the outflow of our tropical depression reaches down into Central America, and a sagging front is interacting with tropical energy all the way up into Oklahoma & Kansas. It is impressive indeed for what is considered a tropical depression and not a tropical storm.

As far as strength, we’re still expecting tropical depression #1 to become Tropical Storm Alberto before making landfall in Mexico However, even if it remains a depression, tropical storm force winds and similar storm surge levels are expected along the Gulf Coast from Louisiana, down to Texas, and obviously in Mexcio. This is why tropical storm force warnings remain regardless of what it does strength-wise at the core of the system.

Outer bands of rain will be capable of locally severe weather, including copious amounts of rain, tropical storm force winds (even if it’s not a tropical storm on paper), and scattered brief tornadoes capable of minor to moderate damage. Because of the size of the system, tidal departures are likely along a large swath of the Gulf Coast. Please stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings.
