VIGOROUS LOW HITS NYC AREA LATE TOMORROW EARLY SUNDAY

VIGOROUS LOW HITS NYC AREA LATE TOMORROW EARLY SUNDAY – Good morning everyone. We have one more beautiful day today in New York City before changes start to take place ahead of a very compact, but very vigorous low pressure system coming up from the south.

Look for sunny skies, low 80’s, and relatively light winds today aside from the immediate shore. Along the beaches, winds turning to the southeast later will help keep things slightly cooler and also roughen up the surf a bit later; so swimmers take caution late.

For tomorrow, we pretty much have the timing and path down for this compact but deep low pressure system heading our way. Expect a sunny start to the morning, then increasing clouds as we go along. With a stiff easterly fetch, upper 70’s will be just about the best we do for tomorrow. Certain spots could see 80 or low 80’s if we hold onto the sun long enough or areas shielded by the cool breeze.

With low pressure on the move and heading just to our west, it changes the dynamic on what to expect. A westerly path will put the steadiest heavy rain to our north and west, but puts us in the zone for the heaviest bouts of rain and strong to severe storms.

Look for light, scattered rain to begin between late afternoon and evening tomorrow. Then, the intensity picks up in a big way overnight and into Sunday morning. As these bands of storms transit the area, expect torrential rain, strong gusty winds, and localized flooding in poor drainage areas. If storms reach severe levels, the primary threat will be damaging winds and possibly an isolated, brief, weak tornado/waterspouts. As far as rain totals, expect totals of 1-2″ across a wide swath, and 3″+ in areas that see the heaviest action.

The bulk of the energy exits by Sunday morning and we’ll be left with sun and clouds late; highs a very muggy low to mid 80’s. As remaining energy lingers and the air remains juicy, we could have scattered showers and storms pop up at any time. So tomorrow doesn’t look like a washout with most of the action after sundown, nor does Sunday with most of the action gone by morning. However, prepare you backyards and/or front porches and protect property from locally high winds that may occur in these bands of precip. Secure light furniture and any other objects that could get damaged. Locally gale force winds are possible during the peak of this system, especially at the immediate shore.

This system will be in and out quick, but it only takes a few minutes of squally weather to do some damage, knock a big branch down, knock a power line down, or move some furniture; so don’t be surprised when you wake up Sunday morning to hear reports of power outages and other reports of damage that happened overnight.
