TROPICAL STORM IRMAS FRINGE BRUSHES NEW YORK CITY – Good morning everyone. Yesterday we were talking about (what will be) Tropical Storm Irma or extra-Tropical Storm Irma and how it may affect the New York City area. Today the picture has become much clearer, but not much has changed from yesterday’s outlook aside from a better chance of rain.

Light rain, possibly moderate at times, will spread over the area between late morning and afternoon today. We’ll also have breezy conditions, increased tide heights, and some pretty good surf along south facing shores of NYC and Long Island.

This is not your typical tropical system and instead, associated with an old front, so don’t expect any warm, muggy conditions leading up to any precip. The system will help pull down cool, maritime air, and temps will struggle to barely reach 70 today. Think of this as a Nor’easter-like system that just brushes us in terms of similar conditions, especially along the immediate shore.

Tomorrow we clear things out a bit late in the day, but we’ll continue to struggle to hit 80° with a fresh northerly breeze. We should see mid to upper 70’s if the sun comes out in time. Thursday will be the only warm day as warmer air ahead of an approaching cold front will help bring in some low 80’s and increased humidity. As the front passes, we could see a shower or storm in the afternoon.

We cool off dramatically on Friday as fall air invades the area. It’ll be sunny and breezy, highs in the upper 60’s to low 70’s. We could also see some 40’s at night away from the City’s “heat island” effect. Saturday, we modify things a bit as the breeze calms down a bit and we go into the mid 70’s.

Sunday had the potential to be warm, but with Harvey’s remnants finally on the move, we could see some clouds, showers, and mid to upper 70’s in the area. For Labor Day Monday, we could see sunny skies and low 80’s if things clear out on time. Stay tuned for that.

In the long range, warm air continues to try and make a comeback, but Harvey and Irma put a temporary damper on it. I still see the possibility of warm air coming back as it continues to build into the Midwest and tries to drift east. As of now, the weekend of Sept 9th has some potential.
