Severe Weather Likely in the NYC Metro Area

Good afternoon everyone. Severe thunderstorm watches have been posted in much of the Tri-State area as strong to severe storms have blossomed in upstate NY, central PA, and some heavy showers & storms at the NJ coast. We’re expecting severe weather possible throughout the afternoon and evening, and it is quite possible severe storms survive the trip into NYC & Long Island.

We also continue to watch Hurricane Beryl as it rapidly deepens on it’s path into the Caribbean. Beryl’s track over the next 24-48 hours takes it right into the islands Grenada, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, and a strong brush across Barbados & St. Lucia.

This is a very dangerous storm, with winds already up to 120mph at the time of this article, and a continued westward movement at 21mph. We’re expecting Beryl to continue its trajectory towards Category 4 status today, and it’s likely we will have a Category 4 storm on our hands within the next 24hrs, if not much sooner.

Hurricane Beryl poses a major problem for the Caribbean, especially for the island of Jamaica and the Yucatan of Mexico. As of now, computer models bring Beryl dangerously close to Jamaica as a catgeory 3 or 4 hurricane, then into the Yucatan.

What happens just before or after the Yucatan is crucial for the Texas & Louisiana coast. As Hurricane Beryl nears the Yucatan, the timing of steering currents and a front sinking down from the Midwest, will decide where Beryl goes.

While we don’t want to see anyone get slammed by the hurricane, the best possible scenario for the Texas coast is Beryl going right into the Yucatan and severely weakened before moisture is drawn up to the north. If the steering currents result in a jog to the north, and the Yucatan just gets brushed or Beryl makes a quick landfall then exit into the Gulf, then we have a big problem on our hands.

As of this moment, it is too early to tell what Hurricane Beryl does that far out, but we do know that Beryl will be approaching that threshold near the Yucatan/Gulf by late Thursday/mid-Friday.

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, very warm & humid conditions, and highs in the upper 80’s. Heavy showers & storms will grace the NJ coast, but we’re really keeping an eye out west for some severe weather starting to build. By later in the afternoon and eve, those storms will be knocking on the door of NYC.

WEATHER RADAR

Things clear out tomorrow for a perfect day. Look for sunshine, a nice breeze, and high in the upper 70’s to near 80. We’ll have more of the same on Tuesday, but temps creep up to 80-85.

Mid 80’s remain for Wednesday under sunshine, but you’ll feel humidity begin to increase. For your 4th of July, sunshine rules again with near 90/low 90 temps.
