SEASONAL SUMMER START HEATWAVE PROSPECTS GROW

SEASONAL SUMMER START HEATWAVE PROSPECTS GROW – Good morning everyone! Happy first day of summer here in New York City. We have a seasonal start to the summer and a couple of speed bumps ahead, but the data coming in is starting to coincide with my instincts as far as a hot July start.

Look for the few remaining sprinkles to exit the area over the course of the next hour, then decreasing clouds. We should actually wind up with a rather sunny day as time goes on and we’ll see highs in the low to mid 80’s. As stated yesterday, the easterly flow returns for tomorrow as clouds return, lower, and thicken again; highs a cool but muggy mid to upper 70’s.

Rain continues to be on the menu for Saturday, but again, it won’t be a complete rainout. Keep your umbrella handy though as we’ll have a chance of showers and a few rumbles of thunder at anytime from late morning onward into the night. Expect mid 70’s, maybe upper 70’s if it doesn’t rain as much. We salvage the weekend on Sunday with a beautiful, seasonable day. Look for sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 80’s.

For the last week of June, we’re looking somewhat dry and seasonable. Nothing crazy precip-wise or temp-wise is expected at this time, but we could see a few chances of some showers or storms as a Bermuda-esque high tries to set itself up; something I’ve been talking about for the past couple of weeks. Monday through Thursday, we’ll migrate between sun and clouds to full on sun, highs in the low to mid 80’s.

At the end of next week, we keep an eye on this short-lived pattern breaking down, opening the door for some possible heat. As of this moment, I’d say we have a 60-70% chance of upper 80’s to low 90’s heading into the weekend of June 30th, then straight 90’s as we approach July 4th and possibly beyond.

As far as the marine forecast is concerned, your best chance of getting outside the inlet with a small vessel is actually today with a relatively light northerly flow. Anything light from the north, northwest, or west in our area generally helps lay the ocean down in our nearshore proximities. For the rest of the week, our easterly flow and then the flux in our pattern, will make the ocean a little rough for the average boater. With water temps slightly below normal and a lot of bait in the area, stripers are still running strong along the beaches. Meanwhile, big fluke are holed up at the artificial reefs and wrecks, so if you get a chance to get outside of the bay, take advantage.
