RARE WEATHER INDUCED TSUNAMI REPORTED LAST NIGHT

RARE WEATHER INDUCED TSUNAMI REPORTED LAST NIGHT – Well, we’ve seen it all the past several months, so why not one more thing? Last night we had a rare event in the area caused by the line of powerful storms that moved through. Essentially, a small meteorologically-induced tsunami was created by the over-pressure of this fast moving squall line which held together over the ocean.

The “danger” has passed, but the phenomena had the potential to cause irregular and powerful currents, higher than normal tides, strong rip currents, and stronger than normal waves along the shoreline. Last time I saw anything like this was back in 2013, but it was a very localized event in a small section of the NJ shore. It surely gives us an appreciation for the power of nature and all of the strange phenomena it can surprise us with.

Most of the area last night saw torrential rain and strong winds in the 55-60 mph realm. I recorded 62mph in my area in 3 minute bursts, but the winner was Bayville, Long Island with 68mph. We also had several funnel clouds reported upstate, marble to golf-ball sized hail (upstate), and 250+ trees down in the NYC area.

As for today, we find ourselves back in the schmutz and on the “wrong” side of our frontal boundary which keeps sinking down and rising up on the edge of that ridge. We’re seeing our high temps in the mid 60’s as we speak, but will be dropping into the 50’s as the day wears on. Expect on and off showers throughout the day and a light, but raw, east wind.

Tomorrow, we have the potential for some morning showers, then clouds hang around, but we’re back on the warmer side of things. It won’t be summery, but low 70’s will feel God-sent after our raw 55 degree afternoon today. On Friday, the same thing happens again and we see our high temps early morning before dropping back into the 50’s. Rain and gloom return as more energy rides the edge of our wobbling ridge.

Our weekend is looking like a mix of gloom and maybe some salvation. Saturday, we have another shot at a round of showers and storms, clouds stick around, and highs in the mid 60’s; maybe some upper 60’s if the clouds thin out. The best day will be Sunday, with warmer temps creeping in, humid, and the slight chance of a shower or rumble of thunder; highs near 80 but we might break it if we can squeeze out some extra sun.

I’m holding off on the long range as of now. People are itching for answers as to when this pattern is going to change, but it’s complicated, slow moving, and we may not fully clear this pattern out till the end of May/early June.
