Quiet & Warm Conditions in NYC Till Thursday

Quiet & Warm Conditions in NYC Till Thursday

07/02/24 12:18pm ET

Good afternoon everyone. The Northeast continues to look stellar for the next couple of days until warmer temps and humidity begin to creep in Thursday, onward. Sunny skies and seasonably average temps dominate  until the “dog days” of summer return. That’ll also come with the risk of scattered heavy showers and storms, with some isolated severe weather possible each day Thursday – Saturday. Other than that, things look rather mundane and typical for summer up there.

We’re also watching Hurricane Beryl which has maintained its category 5 status. At the time of this article, winds remain at 160mph with higher gusts, and movement to WNW at 21mph. This is not only am extremely powerful storm, it is also a fast moving one for its type and location. With a little extra jog to the NW overnight, we’re also looking at the likelihood of a direct hit for the island of Jamaica.

As far as Beryl’s strength, I do believe we begin to see some “weakening” over the course of the next 24hrs as the inflow is starting to interact with the mountainous islands. While this happens, we will see winds settle down a little bit, but the wind-field will expand and Hurricane Beryl will take up more real estate. Regardless, the damage is done and it won’t matter if it reaches Jamaica with 160mph winds or 130. It has had enough Category 5 time to upwell enough water to the point that storm surge will be similar to a Category 5 regardless of landfalling or brushing strength.

We continue to remain concerned for the Texas coast as well. Even though Beryl will hit the Yucatan of Mexico and weaken considerably, exit speed and exact location of landfall will be crucial. Once it exits into the Bay of Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico side, we’re expecting moisture to get drawn up into Texas and impact south Texas and the Texas coast. There could be enough time to get Hurricane Beryl back up to hurricane strength before a 2nd landfall is made. As of now, we are looking at a strong tropical storm or Cat 1 or 2 hurricane on our hands before landfall is made somewhere along the Mexican or Texas Gulf Coast some time on Sunday.

Here is your local NYC metro forecast –
