Oppressive Heat Continues For New York City Area

Oppressive Heat Continues For New York City Area

06/20/24 9:33am ET

Good morning everyone. As Tropical Storm Alberto continues to dissipate and bring heavy rains to parts of Texas and Mexico, we turn our eyes to the Southeast Atlantic coast with an area of stubborn disturbed weather. With our early-season tropical pattern continuing, we will watch for the slight chance of further development into possibly another tropical depression. However, the big story today goes from Alberto and switches to our stubborn heatwave in the Northeast.

Hot air continues to get hung up along the East Coast and into the Northeast & New England, with 90+ degree temps a common experience even up into Maine. With no true end in sight, we could be dealing with one of the hottest Junes on record if this keeps going. At minimum, 90’s hold on tight through Monday or Tuesday, then a possible break before 90’s return again.

While some may say, “this is summer, it’s supposed to be hot”, the answer is yes and no. Average temps in the NYC area this time of year are in the low to mid 80’s. Has the area experienced 90 degree temps in June? Sure, but this is a rare stretch not often seen in terms of 5, 10, or even 15 days in a row. That being said, one stretch doesn’t make another, and it doesn’t necessarily translate into an abnormally hot July and August.

Here is the latest on your local NYC metro forecast –

SATELLITE

Today is the last “dry” day in terms of not having the chance of a thunderstorm in the forecast. It will be hot and humid thought, with low 90’s continuing. Tomorrow looks hotter than previously expected, with mid 90’s possible and the chance of a PM storm.

WEATHER RADAR

Those storms do nothing to truly cool us off, with more 90 degree temps Saturday and the chance of a PM storm. Sunday goes very hot again, with mid 90’s and another chance for PM storms.

To start your workweek, look for more 90s on Monday and the chance of a PM storm.
