NYC SUMMER HEAT MAKES EARLY RETURN – Good morning everyone! For those who aren’t ready to give summer a Viking funeral yet, we have a nice surprise in store for the NYC area. For a couple of weeks now, I’ve been talking about the possibility of high pressure settling in over the area and giving us our summer back.

It looks as if this is unfolding, but the warmth itself is returning slightly earlier due to a few factors. First off, yesterday’s system was rather weak and cleared out faster than expected. This is partially due to a weaker than expected high pressure behind it, causing a lack of dynamics in terms of airmass difference. Add into the mix what could be harmless Tropical Storm Gert, and we’ve changed the destiny of our summer for at least a week.

The result will be sinking air that heats up quick, giving us a sunny and very warm day today; highs in the upper 80’s. Tomorrow, high pressure will drift eastward, giving us light northeast winds. This will increase humidity a notch, but with weak high pressure and sinking air remaining, we’ll achieve upper 80’s to near 90 tomorrow. More of the same for Tuesday and Wednesday, with upper 80’s to near 90 depending on how much sunshine we get.

After this stretch, we wait to see if relatively hot air can hold on or not for late week. More seasonable air will try to make a push, but it looks as if this heat tries to fight back as well. Stay tuned as we calculate to see which one wins out and when.
