NYC SPRING NOREASTER SNOWSTORM GETTING ACT TOGETHER

NYC SPRING NOREASTER SNOWSTORM GETTING ACT TOGETHER

NYC SPRING NOREASTER SNOWSTORM GETTING ACT TOGETHER – Good morning everyone. For those waking up and expecting armageddon, you’re a little early. The pieces for our spring Nor’easter are still coming together and convection is starting to begin off of the south NJ coast. As stated yesterday, the peak of this snowstorm will come late morning and into the afternoon/evening.

For those areas experiencing a sleet or mix right now, we have to wait for the precipitation to become heavier, which will help cool off the rest of the atmosphere and turn everything into mostly snow. Use extreme caution when traveling during this phase of the storm as roads and sidewalks could be very hazardous in spots.

The Snow Map Stays – Final Call

Yes, regardless of NWS’s large amounts on their graphics, the snow map generated yesterday morning stays. I still believe there will be a delay when it comes to sticking and I still think the east end of Long Island will have some prolonged mixing issues. The only thing I would do is add a “+” to the 5-10″ and 3-6″ areas; not to cover my ass or hedge my bets, but an area of thundersnow could skew the final totals in areas, whereas those who don’t see it will fall into range. So let it ride and I’m going all in on my stubbornness.

Any sleet experienced will change over to all snow by mid to late morning for most areas (except the usual spots on Long Island), then continue heavy at times past sunset. Again, we could experience some thundersnow, especially areas in close proximity to the low as it’s blossoming. Then, we’ll have to watch out for little nuances and annoyances such as dry slots and lulls. We won’t know if or where those set up until it happens.

As far as the winds are concerned, they will still be problematic, but not as strong as originally expected. This will vastly lower the chance of any Blizzard Warnings popping up; so while we may not reach the criteria, we could see near-Blizzard conditions at times. Look for sustained winds 20-30 mph and gusts near 40, especially in the evening. Also, expect some minor to moderate coastal flooding and some beach erosion in the typical trouble spots around the area.

Stay tuned and be careful traveling if you have to, and use caution when shoveling the heavy stuff.
