NYC SOAKER OVERNIGHT SATURDAY SUNDAY SCORCHER – Good morning everyone. The heat is on its way for the New York City area, but first we have to transfer that airmass into the area. This typically means a round of heavy rain and thunderstorms, and typical it will be.

Clouds will be on the increase today with a textbook southeast flow ahead of a broad warm front swinging towards the area. We’ll have the slight chance of a shower, with highs in the mid to upper 70’s. IF we get a few extra breaks in the clouds, a few places centrally located (downtown Brooklyn, central Queens) could get to near 80.

Things get interesting tonight as a wide swath of precip heads towards the area. Anytime after midnight, we’ll see the chance of heavy showers and embedded thunderstorms. No severe weather is expected at this time, but warm front thunderstorms can surprise you once in a while. They’re typically just very loud and have very heavy rain; however, once in a while you can get a locally gusty one thrown in there. The biggest threat will be localized flooding in poor drainage areas.

It looks like we may clear things out before noon tomorrow after all, so expect morning heavy showers and storms, afternoon partial clearing. It’ll be a muggy one as clouds break up, the sun works the wet surfaces, and we get into the low to mid 80’s.

The dome of heat is fully over us on Friday. West winds will keep things relatively dry compared to what’s on its way, but we’ll still reach or crack 90 in most areas. For Saturday, look for low to mid 90’s+, then we add in more humidity and go for mid 90’s+ on Sunday. It looks to be a close call record-wise for both Saturday (96 degrees, 1959) and Sunday (97 degrees, 1964).

Once you start adding in more and more humidity into the mix in our area, especially this early in the summer, it’s very hard to heat the air as efficiently. This will be the case for Monday through Wednesday as we drop slightly into the upper 80’s to low 90’s, but it’s equally as uncomfortable in the area. Plus, with the juice turned up, we also increase the chance of a scattered strong to severe storm in the area for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Very warm and humid conditions continue for late week next week as 90’s might try and fight back once again for next Friday and the following weekend. It could be front related though as we try to get a brief relief into the area, but we’ll have to wait and see on that. Typically these ridges are very stubborn and look as if they’re about to collapse, then fight back oven harder. As of this very moment, July as a whole is shaping up to be above average temp-wise. For those who missed not having a true, textbook summer weather last year, summer is here this go around.

As far as the marine forecast goes, Friday through Wednesday will be a great time to get out and tool around the bay. Seabreezes could keep things rough around the inlets and inshore, but you might catch a break on Sunday morning to get out in the ocean a little bit if you’re a small boater. Now would be a great time (when applicable) to get out to the local reefs and wrecks to try and get some of those jumbo sea bass. Keep an eye to the sky for thunderstorms Tuesday and beyond.
