NYC July 4th Heat Remains Viable

NYC July 4th Heat Remains Viable

06/27/24 10:24am ET

Good morning everyone. Relief is on the way in the Northeast and New England after an intense round of thunderstorms yesterday and overnight. Our heatwave is officially broken for a while, with mid to upper 80’s settling in after prolonged 90-100 degree heat. We’ll even get into some upper 70’s to low 80’s tomorrow, before some warmer air and humidity return this weekend.

We also continue to watch the long range for 2 stories on the table. The first being not only a return to some heat, but coast-to-coast heat for your Independence Day. Typically, we don’t see full-on heat ranging from shore to shore, even during peak summer; but the setup is building for it as high pressure will dominate most of the lower 48. As of now, it looks as if 90-100 degree temps range from the East Coast, to the Midwest, and near-shore locations of the West Coast. The only cooler spots we see, are in the upper corners and possibly the upper Midwest with some rain/thunderstorms in mind.

The other feature is a continuation of our tropical pattern and 2 distinct waves we are keeping a close eye on. The first one is borne out of an area of stubborn disturbed weather that has sat off of the Mexican and Cuban coast for the past several weeks. This area helped spawn the historic rains that impacted parts of south Florida, as well as Tropical Storm Alberto in the Gulf of Mexico.

The second feature is a wave off of Africa that sits on the western end of our Saharan dome of sand/dust and is looking very healthy. This one has a better chance of developing into our 2nd tropical storm of the season, but both continue to bear watching. While the disturbed weather in the upper Caribbean is common for this time of year, the strong wave off of Africa is typically uncommon. We usually don’t begin watching the African coast until late August/September. It has a long way to go for now, and only poses a risk to shipping lanes for the next 5 days or so.

Here is your local NYC metro forecast –

SATELLITE

Look for a mix of sun & clouds today. We’ll be in the upper 80’s today, but less humid as cooler air lags behind the front. Tomorrow is looking stellar, with full sunshine, dry conditions, and highs in the low 80’s.

WEATHER RADAR

Clouds return on Saturday and Sunday with the chance of scattered showers and storms each day. Saturday looks average but humid, with highs in the low 80’s & muggy. Sunday is much warmer, with soupy conditions and highs in the upper 80’s to near 90.

Comfortable weather returns for Monday & Tuesday before we start warming up again nearing July 4th. Highs to start your workweek look to be in the low to mid 80’s for average summer days in NYC.
