NYC HOT WEATHER RETURNS EARLY AUGUST – Good morning everyone. Some scattered light showers have transited the area and would should see a few more today. Meanwhile, the big stories will be the return of tropical, showery, thundery weather; and a push of extended very warm to hot air along the immediate east coast as our trough fizzles out.

With rain pulling out this morning and tropical air left behind, expect very muggy conditions and highs in the mid to upper 80’s despite the easterly flow today. That being said, leftover energy could give us a pop-up shower or storm at any point in the afternoon, evening, and even at night. Overnight, we’re only going down into the mid to upper 70’s, signaling what’s to come tomorrow temp-wise.

For tomorrow, we’ll have an increased risk of showers and storms, but the action will still be piece-meal, with not everyone seeing the same conditions. It’ll be hot and oppressive as highs in the NYC area will be around 90 and very muggy. Some showers and storms could produce torrential rain and gusty winds.

We cool off slightly on Friday with clouds and scattered showers with us during the crucial heating hours. Expect highs in the mid 80’s; however, if the clouds break up early and we can squeeze out some rain-free sun, we may go into the upper 80’s to near 90 again.

Over the weekend, hot air begins to make its move with Saturday being the transition day. Look for tropical, muggy, and showery (scattered) conditions for Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 80’s. If you have plans Saturday, keep them as no washout is expected. For Sunday, it’ll be hot and humid with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s and humid.

In the long range, hot air stays with us for an extended period of time. Expect hot and juicy conditions Monday and into next weekend, with highs near 90 to 95 most of this period. We’ll see if it constitutes a heatwave or not, but even if it doesn’t reach the criteria, expect near-heatwave conditions this Sunday to next Sunday.

If you follow Angry Ben’s Angry Weather on Facebook and/or saw my live feed on July 20th, this is what I was talking about in terms of seeing a hot push in August after we got rid of our 2nd wave of troughy weather; then the gears of fall should start to turn. It doesn’t equate to fall-like weather right away, but after this hot period, systems should start moving faster and our high pressure relief when it does come, should be cooler and/or drier in fashion each time it happens.

As far as the marine forecast, write this week off as a loss in terms of ocean action. Stick to the bays and stay close to port in showers and storms pop up. They will be gusty in nature and can cause locally dangerous conditions very suddenly. Your next chance of breaking the inlet safely and staying out there for a while, will be Sunday and Monday.
