NYC HEAT WAVE RAGES ON WITH 95-100 DEGREE TEMPS

NYC HEAT WAVE RAGES ON WITH 95-100 DEGREE TEMPS

06/22/24 9:13am ET

Good morning everyone. A tropical pattern remains locked in across the Gulf of Mexico and Southeast, sending steamy air up the East Coast and into the Northeast. For many parts of the area aside from upper New England, our early-season heatwave continues to rage on, with no letting up till Monday.

That being said, don’t look for any true relief on Monday as oppressive air hangs around, then a return to 90 degree temps Tuesday and Wednesday. In the the long range, I don’t think we get any true relief in the Northeast until Friday, but heat tries to return the first week of July.

Speaking of the tropics, the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto has spun off another disturbance in the Gulf which may become another tropical depression. This one doesn’t have as much room development-wise due to its proximity to land, but if it remains stubborn, we could see a little extra oomph with it before heading into Mexico. We’ll watch it closely as it will bring more heavy rain to areas of Mexico and possibly Texas.

Aside from the heatwave and tropics, our main focus is severe weather expected tonight across Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri; then possibly grazing Michigan and Indiana. A thin line of heavy storms representing less humid and slightly cooler air on the west side of the heatwave, will increase the risk of large hail, damaging winds, torrential rain, and tornadoes.

The time frame on this looks to be later this afternoon into the early morning hours tomorrow from northwest to southeast. Please stay tuned to your local agencies for the latest watches and warnings. These storms are expected to develop fast and move fast.

Here is the latest on your local NYC metro forecast –

SATELLITE

Very hot and humid today and tomorrow is the name of the game. Look for 95-100 degree temps and the chance of a heavy PM Storm each day.

WEATHER RADAR

Monday we “cool” off a bit and into the upper 80’s, but we keep the chance of thunderstorms in the forecast. We look rain free Tuesday and Wednesday, however, low 90’s return.

Moisture returns Thursday with the chance of a few storms and highs in the upper 80’s; then Friday looks pleasantly warm with less humidity, mostly sunny skies, and highs in the low to mid 80’s.
