NYC CAUTIOUS EYES TURN TOWARDS HURRICANE IRMA – Good morning everyone. Today’s update will strictly be in regards to Hurricane Irma and what it may mean for the area. My immediate and long range outlook is holding steady, so for the local forecast and the Labor Day Weekend forecast, click here.

First, a quick caveat about Irma: We have a LONG way to go and it’s still just west of the Cape Verde Islands off of Africa. Here are the facts that we can talk about at this very moment –

1. Hurricane Irma is about 8-11 days away from nearing any of the U.S. mainland if prevailing winds allowed it to take such a path. (this may not happen)
2. It has a wide area of favorable atmosphere to develop and strengthen, probably achieving Category 3 strength and possibly attaining Category 4 or 5 status depending on it’s path as it nears the Caribbean
3. The progression of fronts, possible blocking near Newfoundland and/or high pressure near Bermuda create a concern for the United States, Bahamas, and the rest of the Caribbean

This Hurricane needs to be watched closely. Again, we have a long way to go, but it’s never too early to make sure you go over your emergency plans. Think of this as a reality check considering the events in Texas and Louisiana. It’s better to have a plan/supplies, and not need to use it, than need it and be caught off guard.

What you need – Flashlights, fresh batteries, generator (if feasible), extra gasoline for generator and vehicle, non-perishable foods, bottled water, first aid kit, pet food (if applicable), supplies for children (if applicable) extra cash, and something waterproof to keep important documents and valuables safe.

Have an evacuation plan for those in flood zones – have arrangements with family and/or friends to go somewhere safe PRIOR to any impending storm. Make arrangements for pets if applicable. Do not wait for the last minute. A simple, “Hey there, I’m concerned about this hurricane, can I stay there if it looks like it’s going to hit?” is something that can be done now, and carry over to any storm that may affect us in the future.

There are several paths Irma may take, including being kicked out to sea or suppressed well south of us; So it’s important that you be patient while we figure out the scenarios and in the meantime, go over your old supplies, refresh them if need be, and simply have a plan if things go downhill. The time to do it is in the beginning of every tropical season, but if you haven’t, please do so and avoid any rushes/price gouging.

 

Tropical Storm Harvey is now well inland and moving to the northeast. The remnant low will conitnue to move northeastward. The 44th and last advisory was issued by the National Hurricane Center.
