HURRICANE HARVEY DEVASTATING POTENTIAL – Good morning everyone. We continue our Hurricane Harvey coverage this morning since things are rather quiet here and it’s important that we help out our friends down south.

As of 8 a.m., Hurricane Harvey has 110mph sustained winds with gusts to 125mph. It continues to strengthen as it sits over extremely warm water and there’s essentially nothing as far as air currents to weaken it. At this point, we’re probably looking at a strong category 3 to “minimal” category 4 at landfall IF it continues this rapid deepening.

There’s still time to head the warnings, but time is quickly running out, so if you’re still in the path of Harvey, now is the time to get out of the way. The best direction to go for those in the affected areas, is to head well west/northwest of the coast. You’ll need to get far enough away to evade not only the surge and wind, but the historic rain/flash flooding that will occur due to the extremely slow movement of Harvey.

Harvey’s Landfall Focused At Or Near Corpus Christi

HURRICANE HARVEY DEVASTATING POTENTIAL – With the path’s proximity to Corpus Christi, it’s wind/surge potential, and the prospect of life threatening flash flooding, it’s very possible that Harvey may become the most expensive hurricane damage-wise in modern U.S. history, or at minimum up there in company with Andrew, Sandy, and Katrina. Please take this storm seriously. Having worked in Irene and Sandy and have personally witnessed the power, there is no hype here, just a legitimate worry for the folks in the path of this monster.

For our area, we have our seasonably cool week ahead with low humidity. Essentially today through mid-week next week, expect temps in the upper 70’s to near 80 and dry conditions. We begin to warm up late week and notch up the humidity for Labor Day Weekend as we await to see exactly what Harvey’s remnants do to influence our weather in a positive or negative way. As of now, a rather warm Labor Day Weekend is still on the table.

Marine forecast-wise, today will be our last nice day on the ocean for at least a week. NW winds will keep things laid down, but a switch over to the ENE for 5+ days will start to make for a nasty ground swell as well as rip currents along the beaches. After today, small boaters should stay in the bay and enjoy the sunshine/cools temps safely.
